Strength, Nutrition, and Recovery — Built on Science

Coronado is a Navy town, and that shapes who walks into a program here. Some clients are active duty with a standard to hold and a schedule that wrecks any routine built on the assumption that every week looks the same. Some are back from a deployment and have lost more conditioning than they expected. Some are spouses who ran a household alone for months and put their own training last. Some are retired from the service and living with what years of load carriage left in their knees, backs, and shoulders.

None of those are the same program. So the first session is an assessment rather than a workout: posture, movement, breathing, sleep, injury history, and what you actually eat. From that we set the loading — sets, reps, tempo, rest, range of motion — and progress it on a schedule your life can hold, including one that has to be paused and picked back up.

The island itself is flat and easy to get around, which is a real advantage and a quiet trap. It is simple to walk and cycle here every day and never load anything. Walking is not strength training. The work that protects a back, a knee, or a shoulder over the next twenty years is resistance training, and in a beach town it is the piece most people skip.

Our Integrated Training System

Four disciplines, one program. For most Coronado clients the strength work leads and the rest gets added as the training gets specific.

Strength & Conditioning

Progressive overload and periodization, built for the schedule you actually have. A program that survives a workup, a duty rotation, or a month of solo parenting is one designed to be resumed rather than restarted.

Sports Nutrition

Macros, meal timing, and supplementation set against your goal, whether that is making a standard, getting leaner, holding onto muscle, or recovering better. Built from your numbers, not a generic plan.

Somatic Movement Education

Movement re-education drawing on the teachings of Moshé Feldenkrais, aimed at the compensation patterns old injuries leave behind. Bodies that have carried weight for a living tend to collect a lot of them.

Functional Health Assessment

Microbiome panels, hormonal markers, and food sensitivity screening, for clients whose progress has stalled and who want data behind the next decision rather than another guess.

Who We Train

All ages and abilities. Three profiles come up most often in Coronado:

Active Duty and Post-Deployment

Training with a standard to hold, or getting back to one after months where the schedule belonged to somebody else. We build around that cycle instead of pretending it does not exist: a program that can be paused and resumed, with the strength base rebuilt deliberately rather than crash-trained in the three weeks before a test.

Post-Surgery & Post-Rehab Clients

Cleared by your physical therapist and not yet back to full function. We pick up where clinical care ends, pairing somatic movement work with progressive loading. We have trained clients after ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, spinal procedures, and hip and knee replacements. Performance Training Center is not a clinic and does not diagnose, treat, or rehabilitate injuries or medical conditions.

Spouses and Long-Time Residents

The people holding a household together through a deployment, and the residents who have been on the island long enough to watch a few careers come and go. Same problem in both cases: your own training is the first thing dropped and the last thing picked back up. An hour that is already booked, in your own house, with someone expecting you, is what makes it stick.

Studio & Location

Performance Training Center is at 440 Upas Street, Unit 104, in Bankers Hill, one block from Balboa Park. From Coronado that means a drive over the bridge, which some clients are glad to make and some are not. If you want the full private setup with a coach in the room, it is worth the trip. Street parking on Upas, and the studio takes one client at a time.

For most Coronado clients, in-home is the better answer. PTC’s in-home service area runs from Downtown San Diego to Rancho Santa Fe, and the island sits well inside it. Sessions come to you and work with whatever you have, down to bodyweight and floor space. In-home starts at $300 per visit. If you are away often, Assessment & Program Design at $899 per cycle is built for that — an in-person assessment, a written program, and weekly check-ins while you run it wherever you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to cross the bridge to train with you?

No. In-home training on Coronado is how most clients here work with us — the session comes to your house or your quarters and the program is built around your equipment. If you would rather have the full studio setup, we are at 440 Upas Street, Unit 104, in Bankers Hill, which means a drive over the bridge. Both are real options, and some clients mix them week to week.

Do you offer in-home personal training in Coronado?

Yes, across the island. Sessions work with a garage rack, a bench and dumbbells, a patio, or bodyweight alone, and the program is written for what you actually have rather than what a commercial gym would have. Deployment and duty schedules are normal here, so we build programs that can be paused and picked back up without starting over. In-home starts at $300 per visit.

I have a fitness test coming up. Can you help me pass it?

Yes, and the honest version is that it works far better with lead time than with three weeks. Crash training before a test tends to produce sore joints and a marginal score. Building the strength and conditioning base over a few months and then sharpening for the event gives you a better result and a body that holds up afterward. Tell us the date at the consultation and we will work backward from it.

Do you offer one-on-one personal training, or only group sessions?

One-on-one is our primary model. Every session is part of a customized personal training program built for the individual based on your assessment, your goals, and where you are that week. We also offer small-group training (2-4 people, typically family or close-friend pairs) for clients who prefer it.

How long are training sessions?

60 minutes for standard sessions. Initial consultations are 30 minutes — we walk through your goals, your current fitness baseline, your injury history, and whether our methodology is the right fit for you. Most clients book a follow-up assessment session afterward.

I just had surgery and was cleared by my physical therapist. Can you help me get back to full function?

Yes — this is a large part of what we do. Somatic movement education plus progressive strength and conditioning is built to pick up where clinical care ends, once your physical therapist has cleared you. We’ve worked with clients post-ACL reconstruction, post-rotator cuff repair, post-spinal procedures, and post-hip and knee replacements. We coordinate with your surgeon and PT when relevant. Performance Training Center is a performance-training studio, not a medical or physical-therapy clinic. We don’t diagnose, treat, or rehabilitate injuries or medical conditions.

What strength and conditioning principles do you use?

Programs are built on evidence-based exercise science — progressive overload, periodization (linear, undulating, or block depending on your goals), neural-drive development, and biomechanically-precise movement patterning. We follow NSCA-aligned principles and calibrate every loading decision to your training age, neuromuscular capacity, and recovery profile.

Do you take insurance?

We’re a private personal training studio, not a medical clinic. We don’t bill insurance. Sessions are paid out-of-pocket, but we provide FSA/HSA-eligible documentation for sessions related to post-surgical rehabilitation when applicable.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Sessions cancelled with 24 hours’ notice are rescheduled at no charge. Less than 24 hours and the session is forfeit. Packages are non-refundable but transferable to a friend or family member.

How quickly will I see results?

Individual results vary based on ability, program intensity, recovery, and individual adherence. The clients who get the most out of training are honest with us about nutrition, sleep, and life stress — those factors drive the majority of outcomes alongside the training itself.

What does pricing look like?

In-studio sessions are $175 per session — same rate whether you book a single session or a package. In-home training starts at $300 per visit, with the final rate based on neighborhood travel time. Assessment & Program Design is $899 per cycle. View full rates.

Are you taking new clients right now?

We accept a limited number of new clients each month to maintain coaching quality. The best first step is the free BMR calculator + 30-minute consultation — that’s how we determine whether you’re a fit for our current openings. Reach out and we’ll let you know what’s available.

We come to Coronado.
